Why Everyone Needs A Therapist

Listen On

I used to think that you had to have a major psychiatric disorder to see a psychiatrist or a therapist. This is even with my own mother being a psychiatrist. Mental health is not openly discussed in Indian culture, unfortunately, it's still a taboo topic, much like many cultures. So, despite having a psychiatrist mother, I still thought that someone needed to have bipolar disorder or generalized anxiety disorder to see a therapist.

I started talking about this with my friend, psychiatrist Dr. Nichelle Haynes. She is a perinatal psychiatrist, which means she focuses on optimizing and improving the mental health of women on their journey to motherhood, a key stressful transition point for many women.

As we were talking she said, "Everyone really needs a therapist. There doesn't need to be something 'wrong' with you to go to therapy."

I'll just say that I was floored. It was such a different way of regarding mental health. In this episode, we discuss misconceptions about therapy why it's always good to work on ourselves and the importance of starting therapy before you reach a crisis point.
