Starting A Concierge Medicine Practice

Listen On

What exactly is concierge medicine? It's a way of practicing medicine that's direct to the patients. It means that no insurance companies are involved and that the doctor charges the patient directly, either for the visits or as a membership model. With this level of care, the patients get a "concierge" level of care. They get text messages and emails answered quickly. They know they can always get an appointment to see their doctor and they know their doctor has enough time to spend with them to ensure their medical history is being carefully regarded.

I sat down with my sister-in-law, endocrinologist, Dr. Lisa Wong for this episode. Lisa switched from a traditional practice (accepting medical insurance) to one which she is now able to see half the number of patients and spend double the amount of time with each patient. It's the way medicine was meant to practiced. As she says in the podcast "It's much more congruent with our training."

Even if you're not contemplating going the concierge route right now, this episode is still worth a listen. We discuss the mindset shifts necessary to pivot from a traditional practice to a concierge one and how it truly can affect you work-life balance.
