Start Serial Tasking Instead of Multi-Tasking

Listen On

People always think I must be an expert multi-tasker- even I thought I was an expert multi-tasker! But we all know this can leave you feeling overwhelmed, frazzled, and stressed out. So, what if I told you there’s a better way and it’s called serial taksing. A Stanford study about multi-tasking showed that people who think they are good multitaskers actually had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out unnecessary information- that is going to affect productivity, efficiency, and overall decision fatigue. That’s why I wanted to share this episode about serial tasking that will, hopefully, give you the tools you need to have a more productive and effective approach to completing the many tasks that are important to you. Here’s what we’ll talk about in this episode:

(3:06) Multi-tasking. It sounds like a superpower, but could it actually be our detriment?

(4:50) Time Quiz. Are you a procrastinator, perfectionist, distractionist or prioritizer? Take this quiz to find out and get tips tailored to your type!

(6:55) Nobody is a multi-tasker- it’s a learned behavior. We do it because we have to! Find out how letting go of multi-tasking can help with your efficiency.

(12:04) Why does multi-tasking make us less efficient? Because of the time it requires to set up for new tasks. Multi-tasking can lead to fragmented workdays, which are less productive!

(16:08) What is serial tasking? In short, it’s tackling, completing, then moving on to a new task.

(17:01) Step #1: Prioritize. Focus on the important things, then follow the 1 task approach.

(19:00) Step #2: Set time limits. Divide bigger projects into segments and stick to time frames. We’ll even talk a bit about the Pomodoro method.

(20:44) Step #3: Create a distraction free zone. Work to eliminate some of these things that can lead you to start multi-tasking.

This won’t be easy, friends. But hopefully this episode gives you some tools you can use to start adjusting to serial tasking, and getting rid of this idea that multi-tasking is a superpower. If you know somebody that could benefit from listening, be sure to share it with them and tell them to come find me on socials! Until next time, it was good to see you.
