Screen-free activities your kids will actually love

Screen time limits are easier to set when kids actually want to put the device down.

The problem isn't that kids love screens — it's that we haven't always given them something better to reach for.

As a pediatric ophthalmologist and a mom, I see the effects of too much screen time in my clinic every day: strained eyes, disrupted sleep, and increasing rates of myopia in kids who spend too little time looking up and out.

But saying "no screens" without a real alternative is a losing battle. What actually works is having a go-to list of activities kids will genuinely choose — games that challenge them, entertain the whole family, and hold up on long car rides and slow afternoons alike.

This guide is the list I share with patients' families: my family's real favorites, organized by age and occasion, with honest notes on what kids actually gravitate toward.
